I just read your story: “Why Asian Americans Might Not Talk About Ferguson.” It is fantastic. I am an English teacher, just beginning a Unit on Informational Essays. Would be willing to let me use it in my class?
I also enjoyed it because I am a white male, married to a Korean-Canadian, who exhibits most of the cultural, stereo-typical, learned/ascribed (can you sense me cringing as I type?) behaviours and expectations of Asians. It describes her perfectly (Class valedictorian in elementary & Secondary, three degrees, rarely able to suffer fools, or threats).
But mostly, it’s a great eye-opener for my cornucopia-of-colour-and-ethnicity class — to glimpse and understand someone who is different than you, but fundamentally same.
Thanks.
Geoff
